Driver John Stout Reaches Milestone

Career Steven Transport Driver Explains How He Does It

John Stout recently accomplished a milestone that only a small percent of drivers across America have achieved: three million accident-free miles and 20 years with Stevens Transport. “I don’t even focus on the miles; those just keep adding up in the background,” John said. “I keep my mind on making sure that I stay aware of my surroundings at all times and am in no rush. It did take me a while to get to this accomplishment, but I’m super glad that I did it!”

John was inspired to join the transportation industry after seeing the adventures that other professional drivers were experiencing. “During my local travels in my previous careers, I had seen the many different license plates that were on the other trucks that came through on a daily basis. It was then that I knew that I wanted to experience what driving was like across the country.”

Soon after, John attended a job seminar in Houston, TX, and was hired by many driving companies, but none of them fit his standards. “I wanted a company that would offer solo driving opportunities and offered their drivers top-of-the-line equipment. I saw an advertisement for Stevens in the local newspaper, and after much research, knew that it was the company for me!

John then headed to Stevens’ headquarters in Dallas, TX to attend driving school, orientation, and finally over-the-road training with his trainer. After successfully completing each stage, John was ready to tackle every new adventure as a solo driver that came his way.

One year later, John was eager to advance his career as a professional driver and transitioned to a contractor driver at Stevens Transport CD, Inc. in 1999. “I waited to make sure that this was going to be the right decision for me. Once I realized it was, I purchased my first truck, a 1996 Peterbilt 379, and officially began my career as an Owner-Operator. I have since owned four different trucks, and have enjoyed every minute since!”

John has since traveled across the country countless times and has recently been selected to be a member of the Southeast Regional Driving Fleet. “Even though I’m currently driving in the Southeast region, one of my favorite places that I have traveled to is Moab, UT. The canyons are breathtaking, all of the rocks are different colors, and the river that flows through the rocks is such a sight to see. I’ll never forget that for as long as I live!”

John also recalled the times he was able to bring his daughter along on his travels during the summers. “I really enjoyed those times. She would take over the bottom bunk, play her video games, play piano on her keyboard, and would even read to me while I was driving down the road.”

Before he left, John passed along some sound advice for those drivers who are just starting their professional driving careers. “Always pay attention to your surroundings and never be in a rush. Also, don’t be afraid to make mistakes because we all make mistakes. The important thing is that you learn from those mistakes and apply those lessons to your next delivery.”

When John is not delivering loads, he can be found spending time at home with his daughter. “We really enjoy doing water sports – including swimming and fishing. I also love golfing. But mostly I enjoy just relaxing at home and spending time with my family.”

Congratulations on your success John and we wish you millions of more miles in the future!
